A few people are beating the system using a simple trick. When they are thirsty or need a parking ticket they slip a peso coin into a vending machine. The machine obliges because the size of a peso coin is the same as a one dirham coin. That works out as 13 sodas for the equivalent of one dirham..

A number of residents have discovered that a Philippine peso is as good as a dirham whether it is to buy a soft drink or a parking ticket.

"This is nothing new. It is an open secret," said Maria Juan, a resident.

A peso is equivalent to about 7 fils and a dirham is about 13 pesos.

One of the reasons attributed for pesos working in vending machines is that their weight and size is more or less the same as a dirham.

Despite taking a seemingly disinterested stance for a long time, Etisalat is to be congratulated for finally acknowledging the wishes of their customers and the fact that these web sites offer harmless fun without threatening the security or culture of the UAE.

When I saw this for the first time I did'nt know how to react. At first I thought she was singing a parody finally and realizing she was seriously performing a crap. She embarassed herself on a National TV and surely now she's gone international.

Leyte Landslide

SAINT BERNARD, Leyte, Philippines -- In a matter of seconds, the homes and families of the central Philippine village of Guinsaugon were wiped out, buried under a mountain of soil and rock.

Now survivors must come to grips with both a painful past and an uncertain future.

Around 2,000 people lived in Guinsaugon, near the town of Saint Bernard in the central island of Leyte, before a landslide triggered by two weeks of heavy rain wiped the village from the map on Friday.

More than 200 of Guinsaugon's children were in the elementary school when the landslide hit and were buried along with the rest of the village. Now, only a handful of very small children can be seen among the survivors.

Series of unfortunate events...
The tragedy happened first in October 1991, when flashfloods wiped out around 4,000 residents of numerous barangay in Ormoc, Leyte. Twelve years later in 2003 the tragedy is back, with a with landslides killing more than 200 people in Southern Leyte, the same province where this devastating mega-landslide happened (2006) 15 years later after the first tragedy.

Ingredients for Disaster...
First, the volcanic rocks or “pyroclastic materials” on the mountainous slopes were not “consolidated,” meaning, they were not hard enough.
Second, as a result of weathering, the rocks formed a thick soil cover.
Third, La Niña came, softening the soil cover, which had already been rendered unstable by the fault line and the previous rainfall.
Fourth (my point of view) Lack of Environmental Awareness and Responsibility on both people and the Government.

Combine it all and the rest is History!

Hopes of a miracle had focused on the school amid unconfirmed reports that survivors there sent cell phone text messages to relatives shortly after a mountainside collapsed.

At least 74 people were trampled to death early Saturday in a stampede outside a stadium where thousands of people had gathered to watch a popular TV game show, the Philippine Red Cross said. About 500 people were injured and hospitalized.

About 30,000 people were waiting to get inside the stadium for the program "Wowowee," said Vicente Eusebio, the mayor of Pasig, the Manila suburb where the stampede occurred.

The raffle tickets can be obtained at the gate so everyone was in a hurry. There was pushing and people in front of the gate were crushed. Gordon blamed poor organization of the event for the tragedy.

A charitible act in pretext of profit?

People heed out for the call trying their luck to win the big raffle (doblado, sa ULTRA at homeviewers ay may nag-aantay na malalaking premyo) as promised by the show and hoping to hit it bigtime.

Blame it on whom?
Sadyang sumasalamin sa ganitong mga sitwasyon ang kawalan ng pag-asa ng mga Pinoy na umahon sa kahirapan at umaasa na lamang sa guhit ng kapalaran at nagbabaka-sakali.

It was not the responsibility of the MMDA, Police or any enforcers, the whole thing was an ABS-CBN's sickening event. The blood of these poor people are on your hands. Apologies are not enough, even shouldering the funeral expenses of those who died but responsibilty and liability is everything.

Thousands of "genderless" expatriates are working in the UAE, according to a labour official compiling statistics on the 2005 labour market.

Around 14,000 expatriate workers in the UAE have no known gender, said Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, labour undersecretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

"They are registered under 'it'," he said.

Wave 2: Time up for camera film? Nikon turns to digital

TOKYO -- Nikon, the iconic Japanese camera maker, has put another nail in the coffin of traditional photography with plans to stop selling most of its film models in favor of hot-selling digital cameras.
Nikon said it will end production of all but two of its eight single-lens reflex (SLR) analogue models and axe all of its non-digital compacts, signalling the end of its more than 50 year history of selling film cameras.

Sales will end when stocks run out - news that could trigger a rush by camera buffs to snap up the remaining ones. Experts believe the days of conventional film cameras are now numbered.

Better grab and hold on to your old conventional SLR cameras for it will be a treasure in the future and it's extinction is imminent..

She was sexy and smooth. Her curves was perfect for the hands no matter how big your plan is. Touching her makes you nervous, but it awakens the monster inside you that has been sleeping for a while. The moment I touched her flashes of ideas came into my mind like never before. I was confused what to do first and I was afraid to blew my first shot. So there I was holding her firmly, looking through her eyes, adjusting my grip, focusing to the beauty of nature. I squeeze her curves, holding her tightly, afraid that she might fall. I found my target and slowly pressed my pointy finger, she made a noise and adjusted the position. I pressed again, this time she was quiet not moving a bit. I sensed she is ready and with no second thoughts I pressed her fully. She made a sensual sound that can make someone not to stop. But I have to, I have to see the result. I don't want it to be a dry one. I want it to be full of life, as if it has been sprinkled by drizzling rain. I want her to be happy, ecstatic and she was.

He died at such a young age of 62.

Dubai, Workers at a Jebel Ali labour camp have given up eating meat amid claims one of their colleagues was a cannibal who snacked on a body kept in a freezer.

Chinese men are sticking to a strict vegetarian diet because they say they’re worried they could end up dining on one of their colleagues in the camp’s canteen.

Rumors began Thursday night after a fight broke out between two groups.

Police were called to the scene, and wild stories soon began to spread that officers had discovered the half-eaten body of a Filipino man in the freezer of one of the men involved in the fight.

Police confirmed they were called out to the fight, but laughed off suggestions they’d found a body, half-eaten or otherwise. But labourers at the camp remain convinced that the man is a cannibal, and might not have been acting alone.

How on earth these people are so gullible to rumors. Maybe the hard labor conditions or the racial division among laborers stirs-up their fragile minds in creating and believing these rumors.

The true cannibals are those who don’t play by the rules and those who exploit others for their own sake. Unfair trade and labor practices, corrupt bureaucracy and government officials are to name a few.

Relatively speaking though these are not cannibals they were in the same league. Buwaya (crocodile), Linta (leech) and the most prominent of them all is the Tuko (chameleon) famous for its extra grip and camouflage abilities.

So what would you prefer Chinese or Filipino or simply Sweet & Sour or Adobo?

Siguradong maraming Pinoy ang nabubuhay na parang PBB. Halimbawa: yung mga nakatira sa boarding house na may striktong landlady na kung saan lahat ng gawin mo'y nakikita't pinakikialaman, yung mga nakikitira ka sa kamag-anak na bawat alis mo't uwi ay inoorasan at binubusisi ang 'yong mga lakad at pinariringan ka ng "ehem" na saksakan ng dami ng kahulugan, yung mga nagbe-bedspace or sharing na lang ng kwarto sa ibang taong di mo naman kamag-anak na kung saan ay limitado ang kilos mo't baka maibida sa ibang tao ang iyong bawat galaw. Iyan ay ilan lamang sa mga halimbawa...siguradong may mga iba pang sitwasyong maihahalintulad, marami sa aming mga OFW ang nakakaranas ng buhay ala PBB na nagtitiis sa masikip na company accomodation (kasama ang mga ibang lahi), sa labour camp, sa makipot na studio flat, sa inuupahang silid na puno ng kamang double-deck para lang may matuluyan. There's no denying the Philippines the overall title this time.
Pounding the opposition on various fronts, Team Philippines yesterday clinched its first ever overall championship of the Southeast Asian Games with a Day 8 deluge of 23 golds, pulling away from the opposition and rendering today's closing events with no bearing.

So Unlikely for a Premiere
Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will seek informal talks with Southeast Asian nation leaders over alleged biased officiating in the SEA Games. He questions some of the decisions in favor of the host country, which led to the defeat of Thai taekwondo competitors, including Olympic bronze medallist Yaowapa Burapolchai.

"We may need to talk to straighten out the fact that it would not be good for things to continue as they are," he said yesterday, without elaborating, or referring to any particular sporting events or decisions by referees.

"Watching a number of the events has made me question how things have turned out. But I don't know what to say. The SEA Games will no longer be popular or commonly accepted if it continues in this way," he said, alluding to the fact that decisions in some events have favored local athletes.

"It is hard to win at the Games since the hosts are cheating," Jaruk Areerajakaran, secretary general of Thailand's Olympic Committee told reporters, conceding that the Thai team would not be able to win its targeted 110 to 118 gold medals.

Political Stigma?
It doesn't mean that if our President is being accused of cheating her way to Presidency is that the Pinoy athletes are cheating. Our athletes are just regaining our dignity by gaining medals despite of our leaders political disgrace and by showing that even though we have a rotting political system we are not bunch of losers not to mentioned we have the so called "homecourt advantage" and how can a host nation rigged results in huge proportions? Are Pinoys ready for stand-up comedy?

I often wondered why stand-up comedy is not a hit in the Philippines. Foreigners often describe us as humorous and happy people. But if someone on stage is making such jokes, majority of the Pinoys won't find funny at all, to the point that you can be shot. Nestor Torre had the same observation and he even provided the factors on why stand-up comedy is doom to fail in RP.

* Pinoy comedy being of the slapstick and "gimmick" sort, rather than the verbal humor, satirical social observation and "painful" personal confession that characterize stand-up.

* Filipino comedians generally don't write their material, while stand-up comics often originate their own jokes and stories.

* Stand-up is fearless and cutting, and this doesn't sit well with Asians in general, and Filipinos in particular, because we're balat-sibuyas and take insults, even obviously comedic ones, much too personally for comfort--and for comedians' safety.

Oh those fags on stage that sing, dance and make cruel remarks is not stand-up comedy. Its a drag queen show, which unfortunately most of the time is toilet humor and jolog jokes.

But hey I shouldn't be suprised right? Since Pinoy can't take a critism but it's natural for us to make fun of the people who are physically and mentally challenge.

A batch of new 100-peso bills that mispelled President Gloria's surname from Arroyo to Arrovo is the poke of fun among Filipinos specially in the opposition, literally translated "a robo" means robbery, ripoff, burglary and theft that some of her detractors says it befits her.

"We have to determine who is responsible. If the printer is responsible, they will have a liability," said BSP Deputy Governor Armando Suratos on Monday, noting the investigation would be conducted at the soonest time possible.

After watching National Geographic Specials "Super flu" my concerns about this H5N1 virus hitting the Emirates is imminent. If this virus goes global it will be a chaos in Biblical scale wiping out not thousands but millions of lives or even half the world population.

Chances are?
Considering the chances of Emirates in having birds with this virus is not farfetched. In my observation though I'm not an expert on birds, aside from the Emirates' rapid development it has also created nature amenities such as parks, sanctuaries and protected wildlife sites to balanced development and nature. I remember watching a documentary about the wildlife in Arabia, on one of the series they featured the effects of changing the landscape or greening the sands to the migratory patterns of birds. I'm not against building such parks and sanctuaries I'm an advocate in preserving nature (been an active mountaineer in college). These sprawling man-made oases creates distractions from those high-flyers and lures migratory birds to have their pit-stop in these areas before going elsewhere or considering it their new habitat.

Relieve?
Upon reading the issue "Bird flu virus is not able to survive heat" on Gulf News, I was relieve but after a while it puts me to further analyze whets goin' on by comparing the local and international news. Now it keeps me at the edge of my seat mmmm..there's a big difference. Naaah, I finally realized I'm reading a Senseless Daily better check it on the net or watch CNN and BBC. The virus can't survive heat? Hey! it's winter...I think this press release is kinda late..

A list more than 400 classifications of workers that Australia needs includes health professionals and refrigeration and air-conditioning workers, Neil Dunkin, vice president of MAB International Services Inc., told INQ7.net

A country known for its super strict immigration system, workers and would be immigrants will still undergo the same tough procedure to qualify for work in Australia.

Dunkin, an Australian, said Australia's requirements -- whether for jobs or for residence -- were among the strictest in the world. Job processing takes 12-16 weeks, and immigration 52 weeks, he said.

The requirements include skills assessment, which can take 28 days to six months, and an English language qualifying examination, he added.

Ghost in Arabia..
This story is an actual event happened somewhere along the mangrove coastline of UAE by a friend of mine. Here how it goes, it was a cold winter night under the spell of the crescent moon that lits the mangrove shore. A group of people are scouring the sandy and watery ground to catch those elusive crabs when someone from the group suggests that they'll wait and rest inside their car after several hours out in the mangrove bushes and instead with the group still hunting for crabs and clams in the middle of the night. It was low tide and the time was past midnight, they can barely heard the group that gone far because of the shallow coastline all they can hear are the sounds of crickets and insects around them, they we're sitting inside the car for a while when suddenly out of the dimly lighted shrubs appears what to be a person from their group who's maybe bored and tired of catching those crabs. As the silhouette of a man came closer and clearer just right in front of the car they saw an unimaginable image they won't forget in their entire life. It was a figure of man dressed in condura without a head floating in the air. It seems that the time stood still as they were shocked and speechless. And with the blinked of an eye it disappeared in the cloak of darkness. So for those who likes crabbing and halaan picking at night BEWARE!!!, surely this is a kind of an scary experience more than a bite from the crabs claw. Awwwooooo!!!!

Can't wait to join the bandwagon in discussing the so called Scandal of Orange and Lemons "Pinoy Ako". It's buzzing around the blogspere for sometime now. Critics say that it was a ripp-off from the song Chandeliers by The Care, a short-lived 80's band from UK. Nadamay na rin ba ang Philippine Music Scene sa panloloko at kasinungalingan sa Philippine Politics? Is it a trend to fool people around?

Wow! It really sounds similar and of course the Pinoy version is better. But it would be fair if "OnL" pay tribute or sampling the song than ripping it off totally. Listen to this and be the judge; on the right speaker, you'll hear Chandeliers and on the left is Orange & Lemons supposedly original composition. Use your headphones for best results. Professional and talented artists did this in the past:

Eraserheads sampled "Silly Love Songs" in "Toyang" they acknowledged and credited it.
Parokya ni Edgar used the tune of "I Will Survive" in "Picha Pie" and acknowledged it.

We're taking our snack yesterday on our closed office cafeteria (purposely closed during Ramadan) when I spotted this bottom information on the pack of Dates.

Dates what?
Dates are a festive treat during this holy month, It always comes with Laban (yogurt milk), usually taken during breaking their fast, no Iftar is complete without it. The benefit that interests me more is that "Dates increases male fertility and enhances the sexual strength.” (a natural Viagra?) Ironically for our Muslim brothers sex during Ramadan is prohibited.

To dates or not to dates..
For a non-Muslim like me Dates is a treat aside from its natural benefits because the best varieties springs up during this season specially those with almonds in the middle and flavored ones. I always took advantage on the free taste in the supermarket usually I sampled those AED 55.00 a kilo variety and the taste is truly a food for the Kings.

'Dubai' axed

The re-run movie Dubai was axed by the distributor claiming that they will be busy preparing for Sharon Cuneta's concert that they will not have time for another showing of the film.

Movie ‘Dubai’ will not be re-shown in cinemas, the film’s distributor ABS-CBN Middle East has announced.

It says it is “busy preparing for a Sharon Cuneta concert on December 9 to be held at the Dubai Tennis Stadium of the Aviation Club”.

A few weeks ago the film the attracted contraversy because one Filipino group claimed the 'unrealistic' portrayal of the life in Dubai for Filipinos. So in line with the realistic approach of Pinoy films with OFW themes, I came up with movie titles with some realistic touch.

Dubai: A Dubai court sentenced a barber to one year in prison for having an illicit love affair with a housemaid who also alleged that she was sleeping with her sponsor.
The 23-year-old barber, identified as D.O., and the 21-year-old housemaid, both from the Philippines, will be deported.

Oh you go girl!

In his statement to the police, the 23-year-old denied having an illicit affair. Meanwhile, the Filipina confessed that she was having a love affair with the barber.

She alleged that she was having a similar affair with her sponsor.

The Canadian sponsor denied her claims but his wife said she had suspected that something was going on between her housemaid and her husband.

After reading this news article, I added my barber to the list of persons banned at my place. He might just end up fighting with our watchman.

Me and my friends are joking about the title should be Canada not Dubai because the plot of the story evolves in it and the rest are side stories. A fellow blogger had commented on this and we have the same observation. Truly the movie bears the trademark of being Pinoy. Bakya!!! Big Day for Dubai?

Today is the premiere of Dubai the movie, surely many kabayans are anxious what the movie is all about? Will it be far better than Milan?

STOP!!
I might have all the answers...and it's a big "NO". My research on it was damn right "solid" hahaha, truly it's a big travel cum love story type film and portrays a wrong impression of the true lives of Filipino in Dubai and the rest of the Emirates. Maybe you're wondering if I had already viewed it, Have all the info on my friends fresh from the Phils...Sabi nga nila Dubai is no relevance to the story kasi pwede naman itong mangyari kahit saan.

KEEP STILL..
I will watch it, maybe if I had time to waste or watched it na lang on VCD, it will only take few days to have it on circulating on flats & accommodations. Ika nga abangan na lang natin...and to the producers of Dubai that's the awful truth..Pinoy pa! Can afford to buy expensive mobile phones and gadgets but can't afford to watch it on cinemas, will wait for those Chinese peddlers selling DVD's (5 in one pa) or have it acquire somewhere else.

Ajman Police is now questioning an examiner for allegedly taking bribes and issuing around 200 driving licences to people who have not even taken the test.

"The examiner used to forge the signature of the official in charge of signing the test form," the source said.

Cutting the Talahib

The source added that police also arrested a group of people who pay bribes to obtain the illegal driving licences and they are hunting for all of them to confiscate the licences after which they will be punished according to law.

So if you are quite eager and frustrated in getting a drivers licence, don't resort into bribery. If caught, not only will the cops confiscate your driver's licence, you'll be punish and worst be deported. Remember patience is a virtue. I should know better since it took me a while to get mine. And like most of us, I was tempted to bribe or strangle the examiner everytime he failed me. But I was virtuous even if it cost me a lot.

Milan, Dubai what's next?

Milan or Dubai?

I remember watching Milan years back and the movie really portrays the plight of the Filipinos sacrificing for their love ones and the sequel (as some people says) "Dubai" is currently showing in cinemas in the Philippines and soon to be shown in Dubai on Oct. 12. I’m quite excited but upon watching the movie trailer is quite disappointing, the story is quite predictable and it seems that it’s like a travel docu. showing all the good stuff with a little twist of love.

The Irony

Recently TV patrol correspondents in Dubai featured news on the plight of the 2 abused Filipina maids rescued from their employers and agencies followed up by their report this evening in rescuing about 7 other more maids. How ironic it is that the film Dubai is on its height of media blaze while their (ABS-CBN) news is reporting these stories of OFW’s in Dubai. Why only now? Maybe it’s a media strategy? A juxtaposition of stories? Nice try…

The Plot

Aga Muhlach plays Raffy, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) living in Dubai, United Arab of Emirates (UAE), and we first see him driving a pickup truck across the desert while singing along an Eraserheads song. John Lloyd Cruz is Raffy's younger brother Andrew, whom he sees after nine years. After financially supporting Andrew for some time, Raffy summons his brother there to get work and get to fulfill his dreams. You see, they grew up orphaned, had plans of migrating to Canada and sees Dubai as their ticket there. But things get awry as Andrew falls in love with fellow OFW Faye (Claudine Barretto), who turns out to be Raffy's ex-girlfriend. It seems that Raffy and Faye are still in love with each other.

Packed and ready for Dubai?

Predictably the success of Milan can’t be compare to what will be the outcome of Dubai, Why?

• “We were there for almost a month, and I never met any Pinoy there working as a domestic helper. I also never met one complaining about being exploited and harassed by his employer,” Quintos says. Years ago, she shot a movie in Hong Kong about Pinoy domestic helpers.

Dubai scriptwriters Ricky Lee and Shaira Salvador insist they interviewed hundreds of Pinoy workers there before they sat down to write their screenplay. Aga and John Lloyd portray the brothers who fall for the woman portrayed by Claudine. Since they are already earning enough from their white-collar jobs, they have more than enough time for love.

• This movie has a lot of glamour going on for it as is always the case with its predecessors, but in more ways it doesn't deliver.

• What's worse is, the film stumbles upon trying to find its identity. What exactly is this movie all about? The first obvious reference would be "Milan," where the daily lives of OFWs are featured as a background to a love story. But other than hint at obvious aspects of living abroad, the issues of Filipino immigrants aren't clearly tackled.

Excitement turns sympathy

Yes, I will be watching it but I’d rather not to go on the premiere night maybe on the regular screening. I'm not totally against the film. In fairness I'm so proud that we have film makers producing such socially relevant films and I'm a big fan of Ricky Lee. Hope they can deliver more next time. What’s next Bagdhad, Kabul, Jeddah anyone?

Guen Garlejo Aguilar faces death by hanging if found guilty of killing Jane Parangan La Puebla, 26, also a Filipina maid.

La Puebla's head and limbs were found stashed inside a sports bag behind a metro station at Orchard Road, Singapore's main shopping district, on Friday.

Now this gives a new meaning to Atsay Killer. Another diplomatic headache to the Philippine government that could once again strain relations with Singapore. The previous tension between countries was during the trial and hanging of Flor Contemplacion for killing compatriot Delia Maga.

A doctor hit his dental nurse assistant on the head with a telephone and walk away with a mere Dhs 500 fine and a slap in the wrist. While the poor Filipina nurse suffered a cut in the forehead and received four stitches. She was also reported to the authorities as an absconder and may be facing a six month ban.

"He hit me with the telephone so hard that I had a cut on my forehead and I started bleeding," Castello, from the Philippines, said. A surgeon in the same building gave her four stitches, she said.

The case eventually went to court, where Gouma was found guilty and ordered to pay dhs500 compensation for the attack. When Castello said she was too afraid to return to work, she was reported as an absconder, and she could now be banned from the country for six months.

Everybody deserves justice regardless of race, color, social standing and religion. In this case its clear that justice is only for the priviledge and the chosen few.

Arabs can learn a lot from Asian awards

In the Arab world, the number of foundations that confer annual prizes for significant achievements has been on the rise since the late 1980s.

This, of course, is a good development. However, Arab prizes, in general, lack several necessary criteria.

They are seen as being given only to persons or groups whose political views are similar to those of the organisers. Committees and juries established for the purpose of handling and validating submissions and deciding on winners are often accused of religious, sectarian or nationalistic bias.

On one occasion, for example, 9 out of 10 winners of a cultural award came from a single Arab country, as if the rest of the Arab world had no geniuses in the field.

Awards, on the other hand, have not yet been given in a number of fields that are globally recognised as being important, such as science, economy, arts and culture.

Contributions of individuals and groups to the field of Islamic heritage are highly recognised by almost all Arab annual prizes committees.

But efforts aimed at alleviating human suffering and pain or promoting democracy and good governance seem to be always ignored.

In other words, those who have made significant contributions to such issues as democratisation, human rights, transparency or sustainable development have rarely been honoured.

While this is the status of Arab prizes, Asian awards seem to be ahead in all aspects. Take for example the Ramon Magsaysay Award (RMA), Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

The RMA celebrates the memory and leadership example of the third Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay (1907-1957), who is remembered for caring for all people, fighting injustice and promoting peace.

Donations
Since its inception in 1957, the RMA, which comprises a certificate, a medallion and a cash prize of $50,000 (Dh183,500), has been given to 249 laureates for exceptionally important contributions to six significant fields.

In many cases, winners hastened to donate their prize money to the poor or victims of violence and discrimination.

Such a move has not been widely realised in the case of Arab laureates, particularly the religious ones who often urge Muslims to help the poor but do not start with themselves.

It is enough to look at the names and contributions of this year's winners of the RMA to realise that Arab prizes are still far behind Asian ones.

The 2005 RMA for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts went to Bangladeshi journalist Matiur Rahman, 60, for his wielding the power of the press to fight against the practice of throwing acid on women's faces in his country.

About 300 young women are permanently disfigured every year in Bangladesh in attacks often motivated by spite after victims deny the attackers sex, marriage or suitable dowries.

Matiur has also used his authority as editor of Prothom Alo (First Light), a daily newspaper, to fight corruption, terrorism, extremism and human rights violations.

In the category of Public Service, the winner was Indonesian activist Teten Masduki, 42. He was cited for challenging Indonesians to expose corruption and claim their right to clean governance.

Indian physician V. Shanta, 78, was also cited for the public service award category. She was honoured for her untiring leadership of Chennai's Cancer Institute (WIA) as a centre of excellence and compassion for the study and treatment of cancer in India.

Shanta tirelessly strove to conduct groundbreaking research, train hundreds of cancer specialists and develop the WIA into a world-class research centre with a postgraduate college and a 428-bed hospital.

Laotian Sombath Somphone, 54, won the award for Community Leadership. He was recognised for his pioneering efforts to promote sustainable development in Laos by training and motivating its young people to become a generation of leaders.

Also among the awardees were Thai Senator Jon Ungphakorn, 58, and South Korean activist Yoon Hye-Ran, 37.

Ungphakorn received the RMA for Government Service in recognition of his impassioned insistence as a senator that Thailand must respect the rights and attend humanely to the needs of its least advantaged citizens.

Yoon, the winner of the 2005 RMA for Emergent Leadership, was honoured for her catalytic role in enabling Cheonan's civil society to exercise its social responsibilities dynamically and democratically.

There was no awardee this year in the sixth category, Peace and International Understanding.

Apparently our crusaders against illegal numbers game have been receiveing 'donations' from the state run PAGCOR. Although there is nothing illegal if the Church accept funding from gambling especially if it is legal gambling money. But its a question of morality not legality.

THE PRICKLY issue of gambling money and the Church has again been highlighted by allegations that three prominent bishops are receiving "donations" ranging from P500,000 to P4 million from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor).

A source in the state-run gambling agency named the prelates as Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla, outgoing president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), and Archbishop Paciano Aniceto of San Fernando town, Pampanga province.

The source, who provided the Inquirer with documents but asked not to be named, said the donations to the bishops were usually taken from the "intelligence fund" of Pagcor chair Efraim Genuino.

This intelligence fund is not subjected to regular auditing procedures, and only Genuino and a ranking official of the Commission on Audit know how it is disbursed, the source told the Inquirer.

When money talks, everybody listens. Especially the clergy.

Pagcor has also been giving cash gifts to clergymen on special occasions like Christmas, according to the source.

"These amounts are given regularly," the source said. "They are open to the eyes of those who'd like to see them."

The source furnished the Inquirer a copy of a three-page memorandum showing the breakdown of "Christmas gifts in the form of cash donation" to five bishops, 45 priests and monsignors and 18 religious groups.

This is quite bothering since the main problem the Catholic Church is facing today, is not lawsuits from sexual abuse cases but rather most of the clergies are being consumed by material wealth when they should be living a simple life like Jesus Christ. The Philippines has developed an elitist system, from the State all the way to the Church. They are living large at the expense of the poor.

The number of runaway maids seeking shelter at the Philippine Labour Office in Dubai has doubled in a month, from the usual rate of 30 plus to more than 60, straining the shelter's capacity.

Vicente M. Cabe, labour attache at the Philippine Consulate General, told Gulf News the reason for the increase was due "to a combination of many factors".

He said it could mean that more Filipinos were aware of their rights and know where to go when they got into trouble.

"Maybe they know that we can help send them home," he said.

Another was that many cases were not being resolved timely enough to accommodate newcomers at the shelter, he added.

Other reasons included the growing Filipino population in the UAE. Consulate figures placed the number of Filipino expatriates in the country at more than 200,000, with the figure growing at one per cent monthly.

Whatever the reason, Cabe said the Consulate General was concerned over the increasing number of runaway maids seeking help.

"It's always alarming to us whenever there is an increase," he said.

Cabe said the most common complaints the office received from the maids were unpaid wages and mistreatment.

But...

Lt Col Al Khidhar said foreign workers leaving their jobs will no longer have an entry ban stamped on their passports, enabling them to re-enter the country on any type of visa, other than employment

However...

However, according to the new rule, if an employee has been banned by the labour ministry, he cannot work in the UAE during the ban period, but can enter the country nevertheless as a tourist.

Maid plunges to her death from flat on seventh floor

18/8/2005 Abu Dhabi:A Filipina housemaid plunged to her death from a tower building in the city centre yesterday, police sources said.

Police said she fell from a seventh floor apartment of a building on Istiqlal Street. Residents told Gulf News the accident happened at about noon and the woman died on the spot.

When contacted, there was no response from the family she worked for. However, residents believe the woman slipped and fell while working on the balcony of the apartment.

The Philippines Embassy said she was aged 34. end

Housemaid dies after jumping from 15th floor

13/7/2005 Sharjah: A 24-year-old Filipina housemaid died after jumping from a 15th floor window of a building in Sharjah, a police source said.
Police said the incident happened at about 2pm last Wednesday at a building in Al Nahda opposite the Sahara Centre.

According to police investigations the housemaid jumped from the window of her room following a dispute with the family she worked for.

The Lebanese family told police the maid had to look after their four-year-old child and the child had told his mother the maid had beaten him. The maid was shouted at and she locked herself in her room.

The housewife's husband was called to help in the dispute. When he reached home he saw a woman's body had been covered up by police outside their building. It was the housemaid's body.

An Indonesian housemaid, who works in the same building, said she used to see the Filipina housemaid playing with the child under the building.

Another Filipina housemaid in the same building said she had heard the housemaid had been having financial problems and was unhappy.

"She worked for the family for one year in this building. I think she used to work for them before they came here but I'm not sure," she said.

Police are investigating the case to find out the reason behind her death, they added the maid was not on the family's sponsorship. end

Once again bayanihan is in the hearts and minds of our community leaders in Dubai. They plan to set up a charity foundation for our kababayans here in the UAE that are in need.

"The money we raise will go to people with serious illnesses like cancer, for example. Also Filipinos who were abused by their employers or do not have enough money to go back home," she said at the sidelines of the monthly community leaders meeting at the Consulate General of the Philippines, yesterday.

This is a for worthy cause, so instead of buying now a celphone slash digital camera slash mp3 player slash radio slash video game, maybe you can postpone it by a month or two and donate a portion of it to our needy kababayans. Or you can just give your beer money.

Etisalat finds Friendster.com friendly again

After months of being blocked, Friendster.com is available to the UAE again. Apparenty, Etisalat recieved a lot of complaints against the site because the usual reasons.."it is inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political and moral values of the UAE"

Etisalat said yesterday it has unblocked friendster.com, a popular online community that connects people across the globe. Officials said the site had been blocked or "proxy filtered" after some of its users had posted obscene messages and pictures.

"We have received numerous complaints from our customers regarding this [the obscenities]. On contacting the administrators of the site in question, eCompany failed to receive any feedback on the same," said Abdulla Hashim, a senior manager at Etisalat's Internet arm, eCompany

We would to like thank Etisalat for unblocking such harmless site like Friendster. For the users of Friendster please refrain from posting obscene pictures...like your geeky high school photos..

The Tales of the Flat-Nosed Sheikhas

Coming from land of poverty and hardship. Working like slaves in a foreign land far away from home. Meeting the 'love' of her life that forever changed her fortunes. This is the tale of the flat-nosed Sheikah.

After working for so many years in Dubai she met someone who can finally get her out of her misery. She had been around, I think she had the United Nations on her bag. This time she hit the jackpot, she manage to bag a rich, powerful Arab guy. He provided her the business where she can be the boss, a first during her lifetime. Yet power and greed went up her head as fast as she dropped her panties. She enslaved her compatriots working in his company. Sweet promises were made when she took the poor bastards from their hometown. Promising wealth and fortunes in the land of Black Gold. Yet when the workers arrived they were paid so dire that even the poor back home has a better life. Deducting all expenses she could think of. Madam Sheikah always reminded her slave that they are are forever in debt of gratitude to her for bringing them here. So the slaves have no choice but to sit it out here and make ends meet with the salary they received. And so Madam became a full pledge Sheikha, or is she? It turned out that our little bitch was just..well...just one of the bitches of this Arab guy.

That is the tale of our Flat-Nosed Sheikha.

Going home to our native land is what we look forward to always. We get excited to see our forsaken country we call home. Although before we reach in promise land, there's no shortage in amusement in the airport and plain alone. Dubai airport, enroute to Manila is the best place to find our Flat-Nosed Sheikha. This is her story..

Woman: Uy kabayan kailan ka pa dito sa Dubai? (How long have you been here in Dubai?)

Flat-nosed Sheikha: Matagal na ako dito. (I've been here for a long time.)

Woman: Muka nga, kasi dami mong alahas, siguro maganda trabaho mo dito. (Looks, like it. You have to much jewelry, maybe you have a good job here.)

Flat-nosed Sheikha: Ahh ito bigay ito ng Arabo ko. Nuka day kung gusto mong umunlad mag Papa ka ng Arabo. (Oh this one? it was given to me by my Arab 'friend'. If you want to make it here, get yourself an Arab boyfriend)

Woman: Ay ganun ba? (Really?)

Flat-nosed Sheikha: Ay oo, ang Arabo ko sobrang yaman sunod lahat ng layaw ko, me katulong pa kami sa bahay kaya buhay donya ako. (Yeah its true, my Arab boyfriend buys everything I want. We even have maids at home so I live like a queen.)

Woman: bwenas mo naman (You're so lucky)

Flat-nosed Sheikha: Korek! Ang Arabo ko bumili ng LIXOS (Lexus), ang ganda ganda, ang sarap sumakay. Tapos ang ganda pa ng flat namin 3 bedroom centralized A/C...etc..etc..yabang...yabang..yabang..Kaya kung ako sayo kabayan magisip isip ka, hindi ka yayaman ng kakatrabaho dito. (That's true, My Arab bought a Lexus and its so beautiful, it so nice to ride into. And we have a 3 bedroom flat which is so beautiful and its a centralized A/C one...etc..etc..brag..brag..brag..if I were you, better be smart and get yourself one too.)

At this point the woman is already irritated because the flat-nosed Sheikah made her feel that she is better than everyone else.

Woman: Sabagay, kasal na ba kayo? (You have a point, are you guys married?)

Flat-nosed Sheikha: Hindi, kasi me asawa rin siyang Araba. Pero ok lang basta binibigay niya lahat ng gusto ko. (nope, because he has an Arab wife. anyway its fine since he gives everything I want.)

Woman: Ah ganun (antipatika tone) (Ah ok {with a sarcastic tone})

Watch out for more tales of our Flat-Nosed Sheikhas.

Glossary

Flat-nosed Sheikha: A Filipina married or engaged or in relation or having an affair with an Arab guy who thinks she is better that everyone else especially to her compatriots. One who manage to 'succeed' in the Gulf and now enslaving her fellow Filipinos because of greed. One can be spotted in parties, Philippines Embassy/Consulate and major malls in Dubai. Be warned, the Flat-nosed Sheikha is 'mas maarte pa' than the local women...hence the expression Feeling Sheikha!

Nomads of the Orient

Hundred of years ago a good number of Asians braved the rough seas in search for greaner pastures. Armed with their goods and trading skills they landed in the beautiful achipelago. For most of them its was just business, just temporary, a staging point. But the sheer beauty of the islands captivated them. And so a community of mix race and culture living harmoniously made what is the Pearl of the Orient today. The Nomads found their promise land. The Nomads ironically settled down at one place.

At present the Nomads are braving again the rough seas in search of a better life. Majority of them landed in the golden sands of Arabia. Working in under the punishing heat and desert chills. These Nomads were driven out from their paradise that was pillaged by a number of invaders disguised as saviour of souls, bringer of good fortune and teachers of infinite knowledge. As result the once euthopia of the orient is now a banana republic of warring religious beliefs, unstable political system and corruption to the highest level of governmet.

And so here we are, the Nomads of the Orient, leaving our promise land armed with hope and dreams. We hope that our travel is just temporary, and the country we land is will just be a stop over. We dream that the Pearl of the Orient would regain its sparkle and charm.
